Credits: Tapinto file image To the Editor: Chatham Neighbors, Please join me in voting for Mikie Sherrill for re-election to represent us in Congress. As you may know, Mikie is a US Naval academy graduate, served ten years as a Navy helicopter pilot and later worked with law enforcement as a federal prosecutor in NJ. She is also a mom of four school-aged children who prioritizes the issue of gun safety. With COVID-19 closing down schools, we can’t assume the epidemic of school shootings will not return after we have a COVID vaccine. Yes, Chatham is a safe town but the tragedies in Newtown, Parkland and other seemingly idyllic towns opened our eyes to the realization that no community is immune from gun violence. Unprecedented gun sales coupled with economic distress, increased feelings of anxiety and isolation and rising unemployment create a deadly combination. Access to a firearm at home triples the risk of suicide death. Unintentional shootings by children are on the rise with more kids schooling from home. It’s estimated 4.6 million kids live in homes with unsecured firearms. In Congress, Mikie voted for HR-8, a bipartisan bill that requires a background check for every firearm sale. While licensed gun stores require background checks, purchases at gun shows have no such requirements. Our strong gun safety laws in NJ are of little use if a potential shooter can drive an hour to a gun show in Pennsylvania to purchase a rifle with no questions asked. More than […]
