Moms Demand Action for gun laws rally planned for Racine June 3

RACINE — When people hear the names Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and now Santa Fe High School, images of grief-stricken family members and friends often come to mind and some wonder — how could this happen? One local group is hoping to build support to change Wisconsin’s existing gun laws, or create new ones. The Racine group Moms Demand Action for Common Sense Gun Laws is hosting a rally at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 3 on Sam Johnson Parkway to advocate for local gun safety legislation. The group plans to plant orange flags on Friday and leave them until the rally to symbolize the hundreds of victims of gun violence in Wisconsin each year. The rally is set to feature Racine Mayor Cory Mason and state Rep. Greta Neubauer, D-Racine, who is an advocate for gun safety legislation. “I’m not willing to wait until we have a school shooting in Wisconsin to have this conversation,” Neubauer said. “With the way things are going in this country, if we don’t see any change it is inevitable that there will be (school) violence in Wisconsin.” Although efforts to pass a universal background check law in the state Legislature failed last session, Neubauer said she is hopeful the state can pass it in the coming session.
