More N.J. gun laws would be dumb and dumber | Letters

I am greatly disturbed by the article, “N.J. lawmakers move to toughen state’s already strict gun laws.” Every New Jersey citizen should be, as well. This concerns a package of new restrictions that were approved by an Assembly committee Dec. 13. Among the proposed changes is that gun-purchaser cards, now valid indefinitely, would need renewal every four years. Why? So legitimate renewals can be denied? Or, is this designed to get more revenue for the state? Also, new sales or non-family transfers of .50 caliber firearms would be banned. A .50 caliber rifle is smaller in diameter than a 12-gauge shotgun. Gun enthusiast groups say no crimes have been committed with .50 caliber rifle. It’s also dumb to require homeowners to store their firearms in a lockbox or safe. Imagine a homeowner under duress, with a criminal breaking down the door. Is the homeowner to tell the criminal, “Wait until I get my key to unlock my firearm so I can defend my family”? Gov. Phil Murphy says he says he has no problem with law-abiding Second Amendment supporters, yet that is exactly who will be affected by his proposals — certainly, not criminals. A perfect example appeared recently concerning Ordale R. Telfair of Bridgeton, who was sentenced to 60 years following his conviction for shooting and killing a man eight days after he was paroled from prison on a prior weapons possession sentence.
