New Hanover County Board of Elections deserves thanks for a smooth election

StarNews readers voiced their opinions about armed protesters at vote counting centers, Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and the New Hanover County Board of Elections. Wilmington StarNews EDITOR: No matter how the final vote turns out, the Board of Elections deserves kudos for a smooth election in New Hanover County. As a new resident to Wilmington, I volunteered to learn about issues affecting my community. The BOE provided excellent online training, communicated with volunteers regularly, and stocked polling sites with cleaning supplies. Election Day was long and tiring, but also fun, enlightening and non-partisan. I also want to thank the Sheriff’s Department for their checks on polling sites that day, adding an extra measure of comfort for those of us working during a pandemic unsettling times. Katherine Schultz, Wilmington "No weapons" allowed EDITOR: I find it very alarming that armed protesters, some with semiautomatic assault rifles, were allowed to be present outside vote counting centers while the American presidency was being determined. This is intimidation in its darkest form. There are some locations where armed protesters just should not be allowed, like rallies, protests, polls, and government locations. Second Amendment rights are alive and well. But certain places and events should be “no weapon areas”. In 1791, when this amendment was created, there were two types of guns – muskets and flintlock pistols. It was inevitable that guns would become more sophisticated over time. But I doubt the intentions of that amendment were to allow weapons like semiautomatic assault rifles […]
