News 13 Exclusive, Part 2: Rep. Cawthorn talks 'Donument' bill, gun rights

(Photo credit: WLOS Staff) ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — The U.S and Mexico border is more than 1,100 miles away from Buncombe County. But Congressman Madison Cawthorn, who represents areas in Western North Carolina in Washington D.C, has proposed legislation to make the border wall a national monument. That move would prevent the removal of current portions. However, it’s likely the measure won’t go anywhere. “I genuinely believe it’s fulfilling a campaign promise,” the congressman told News 13 on Thursday, April 22. He calls the legislation "The Donument Bill," and he wants to honor the former President Donald Trump. Congressman Cawthorn said he believes it may have an impact in his district. “It’s very clear we have a lot of illegal immigration in Western North Carolina — specifically in Henderson county, along with Cherokee County,” Cawthorn said. Homeland Security hasn’t responded to News 13’s request for confirmation, but the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office says it’s seeing illegal immigrants being released back into neighborhoods after serving jail time for crimes.
