NRA: Mayor Dennis, West Lafayette wrong on gun control

Buy Photo The recently passed resolution promoting a failed gun control agenda in West Lafayette is yet another example of how gun control extremists are attempting to take away our freedoms. Mayor John Dennis calls the resolution common sense and suggests National Rifle Association members would support it. Nothing could be further from the truth. Mayor Dennis’ resolution supports measures that would criminalize the everyday activities of law-abiding gun owners in Indiana. Gun control measures would do nothing to make the people of Indiana any safer. Instead, they would only make it harder for law-abiding Hoosiers to protect and defend themselves. What Mayor Dennis calls “stricter” background checks are, in fact, proposals that would force law-abiding gun owners to seek government permission and pay government fees to simply loan or give a firearm to a close friend, neighbor, co-worker or family member. Extensive studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and by National Academy of Sciences have proven that no gun-control law has ever reduced violence. Additionally, years of research shows criminals do not get firearms from gun shows or other so-called loopholes that Mayor Dennis decries. A U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics survey of state prison inmates who had used or possessed firearms in the course of committing their crimes found that 77 percent acquired their firearms from street or illegal sources including theft, black market purchases and straw purchases.
