Opinion: I'm a lifelong Republican and proud gun owner but permitless carry is a callous distraction

I don’t come by these words lightly, as a lifelong Texas Republican — dedicated enough to have served as Harris County Republican Party Precinct Chair and longtime donor to the national Republican Party — I’m no left wing gun-grabber. I’m a former rancher and gun owner and Ronald Reagan fiscal conservative. But the party I’ve spent a lifetime supporting gives me pause lately, and that applies to House Bill 1927, which passed out of the Texas House with the support of every Republican, save two. HB1927 not only removes the training and background check required to obtain a License to Carry (LTC) a handgun in public, it would also require a person to receive “oral or written notice” before they are prohibited from possessing weapons in sensitive spaces such as sporting events, courthouses, polling places and bars, which is a complicated way of saying that volunteers will have to ask armed men to leave. So essentially the folks that carry their guns into the gas station, H-E-B and your favorite local restaurant might never have had a criminal background check to make sure they’re not prohibited from possessing the gun on their hip. And if they do it anyway, a (likely) unarmed person has to ask the armed person to vacate the premises.
