O’Toole flips positions on guns, says he would maintain Liberals’ banned firearms list

VANCOUVER–Conservative leader Erin O’Toole is reversing his party’s official position on firearms, committing to maintain the Liberals’ 2020 list of prohibited guns. The Conservative platform pledged to repeal Liberal legislation expanding background checks on gun buyers and reverse a 2020 ban on 1,500 “assault-style” weapons, including the AR-15 rifle and the Ruger Mini-14. But in an attempt to clarify his position Sunday, O’Toole committed the Conservatives to keep the Liberals’ list of prohibited firearms. “We’re going to take the politics out of the classification process for firearms and focus on public safety,” said O’Toole. “I want people to know that we’re going to maintain the assault weapon ban and the restrictions put in place in 2020 … Let’s have a public and transparent process to take that politics out and focus our resources on where it’s needed.” Asked directly if he would repeal the Liberals’ background check legislation, Bill C-71, O’Toole did not answer the question. The party platform, released in the early days of the election campaign , committed a Conservative government to repeal “C-71 and the May 2020 Order in Council” banning assault-style guns, and to conduct a “review of the Firearms Act with participation by law enforcement, firearms owners, manufacturers, and members of the public.” O’Toole dodged multiple questions Sunday about why he reversed his position. More to come
