Our recommendation for the 4th Congressional District

Vote about it. (DMN) We recommend Republican Pat Fallon for the 4th Congressional District seat previously held by John Ratcliffe, who was appointed director of national intelligence. Fallon, 52, brings legislative experience and a record that mixes commonsense legislation with overt appeals to cultural politics. Most recently a state senator from Prosper, Fallon also previously served three terms in the Texas House, where he established a reputation as a consistent social and fiscal conservative. Fallon stridently supports limited government, low taxes, gun rights, personal responsibility, free markets and property rights — areas that this editorial board generally supports. He voted to abolish red-light cameras and to end surprise billing on medical procedures. Despite posting one of the most conservative voting records in the Legislature, Fallon also supported the limited use of THC for medicinal purposes. He also is tenacious, as evidenced by an open-government bill early in his legislative career that required DART, cities of a certain size, school districts and counties to record their regular meetings and post the videos online. A similar bill failed in 2013, but Fallon stuck with the bill and got it passed in 2015. But he has also cast votes that burnished his credentials as a conservative cultural warrior. He voted to defund Planned Parenthood and to outlaw Shariah law in Texas, an unnecessary symbolic vote.
