Palm Desert gun store owner says he will challenge Rep. Raul Ruiz in 2022

After a pair of unsuccessful campaigns in the 1990s, Storm Jenkins didn’t expect to ever run for elected office again, but the past few years of U.S. politics changed the San Francisco native. “I thought I was totally cured of the bug, but apparently it’s one of those bugs that lays dormant until triggered by something,” Jenkins said. “I just got so tired of yelling at the television set that I either had to shut up or do something.” Jenkins, who owns Guns of Distinction, a firearms store in Palm Desert, offers a grim picture of the modern-day United States, arguing the First Amendment is “virtually non-existent now,” the Second Amendment is “under constant attack” and that federal overreach has reached new levels. “We’ve gone from being free citizens to subjects of the crown,” Jenkins said. “We actually have the Attorney General of the United State, saying if you dare question elected officials, we’re going to investigate you as domestic terrorists … and you’ve got a government saying you’re going to get fired (if you don’t get vaccinated).” Jenkins, a Republican, wants to push back hard against the Biden administration’s policies as a representative in Washington, and he plans to announce his bid to run in California’s 36th Congressional District at a luncheon Sunday with the Coachella Valley Conservatives.
