Parkland survivors recount harrowing school shooting, advocate for gun control at Orange Village temple

They also advocated for gun control and urged those in attendance to register to vote.(Evan MacDonald, cleveland.com) ORANGE VILLAGE, Ohio – Four months ago, Mandi and Harris Jaffe huddled in closets at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, frantically texting each other and family members as a gunman massacred 17 students and teachers. Since that time, the 16-year-old twins and their classmates have embarked on a nationwide effort to prevent any more students from experiencing a mass shooting. The siblings appeared Friday at Temple Emanu El in Orange Village to recount the harrowing day and advocate for gun control measures. "I am a survivor of a school shooting," Mandi Jaffe said. "That should not be a sentence a 16-year-old has to say again." The Jaffe twins told the hundreds in attendance at the Jewish temple to contact their legislators about gun reforms, such as banning high-capacity magazines. They also asked everyone to register to vote, and to support politicians who are in favor of gun control measures. "We shouldn’t have to work so hard just to make sure our schools are safe," Harris Jaffe said. "We shouldn’t have to fight for common-sense gun laws. But we choose to."
