Pastor: In the same old gun debate, unfounded fears create real devastation | OPINION

This past week I took significant time to sit at the Buncombe County Commissioners meeting out of concern for the anticipated gathering of a group seeking to ask the county government to engage a non-binding resolution on protecting the Second Amendment rights of Buncombe County citizens . We have significant protections for guns in our nation and state. The Second Amendment often emboldens citizens and legislators to work diligently to protect gun owners’ rights while neglecting the portion of the Second Amendment that says well-regulated. I listened as one citizen clearly emphasized “shall not be infringed upon” and was pained to see a refusal to acknowledge the plainly written language that states “well-regulated.” To hear the people speak, you would have to believe that the government is coming for everyone’s guns. I kept thinking what nonexistent attack on their guns have they imagined. They are speaking from a belief that there is a movement to collect all the guns and strip citizens of access to any firearms. In my lifetime, such a movement has never had any real traction. Nearly every citizen who seeks actions on guns, seeks to have them well-regulated as the balance to how we achieve protection in our lives and with our families. Speaker after speaker spoke to their need to protect themselves and others. One speaker intimated the impending civil war that would come because of the government infringing on the right of the people to bear arms. The notion that we have unfettered […]
