A Republican legislative candidate’s Instagram post of himself staring down the barrel of a 9mm revolver with the caption “my happy face” is eliciting criticism from Democrats with a week to go until the special election in the 19th House District, which includes parts of West Hartford, Avon and Farmington. The controversial post from last October is part of a series of images of guns and ammunition on the social media feed of Bob Margolis, who is the founder of LifeSafe Training LLC, an Avon small business that offers firearm safety training and tactical defense classes. Margolis is facing Democrat Tammy Exum in next Tuesday’s special election in the 19th District, the former seat of Derek Slap, a West Hartford Democrat who was elected to the state Senate in a Feb. 26 special election. “I just think it’s really disturbing,” Exum said. “It just shows that he’s out of step with the people of the 19th District. They find it scary.
