Post endorses: Bonfiglio, Carroll, Snyder are best choices for their Florida House districts

HOUSE DISTRICT 82: Two first-time candidates are vying to represent this heavily Republican district, which encompasses Jupiter and much of Martin County. Democrat Elisa Ackerly, a former subcontractor, lives on a farm, breaking and training horses. Her rural life, she says, makes her sensitive to the deterioration of the environment, which she blames on “irresponsible leadership, deregulation, corporate giveaways and kowtowing to special-interest groups.” Fighting these forces is the centerpiece of her campaign. Unfortunately, that campaign appeared to be somewhat disorganized when Ackerly met with The Post Editorial Board. And the conservative positions of her Republican opponent, John Snyder , seem more in sync with prevailing attitudes in the district. Snyder is a Marine Corps veteran who owns a national recruiting and staffing company. His website reads straight from the Republican playbook: he vows “to cut taxes, empower families with options in education, stand up for the rights of the unborn, and defend the Second Amendment.” We disagree strongly with Snyder’s opposition to repealing recent tax breaks for corporations (which should be a prime consideration in trimming the COVID-shrunken state budget) and his disdain for the Affordable Care Act. On the other hand, he says he will fight for the cleanup of the waterways so important to the Treasure Coast. Snyder has raised 17 times as much money as Ackerly, according to Florida Secretary of State records, as sure a sign as any that he’ll win this race.
