Post shows City Council candidate in menacing pose, holding a gun

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Some Kansas City voters are seeing posts showing a candidate for City Council in a menacing pose, holding a gun. The picture of Missouri state Rep. Brandon Ellington, who’s a candidate for City Council, shows him holding a rifle with a handgun in his back pocket. "I think what they’re trying to do is send a message that I am something I am not," Ellington said. The picture is part of a post sent out by his City Council opponent, Wallace Hartsfield II. The picture is legitimate. Ellington, 39, said that it is off the cover a CD, called "Hood Poetry," that he cut in his early 20s. "Growing up, I went through all mis-ideologies and misinformation that came through the inner city," Ellington said. Since 2011, Ellington has been in the Missouri House. He said he had consistently voted against efforts, such as broadening the gun-carry laws and arming teachers. "I’m pro Second Amendment but the legislation that came through the state, none of it has been sound when it comes to reasonable gun laws," Ellington said. His opponent, Hartsfield II, comes from a family of prominent ministers. In Jefferson City, Ellington used to be the head of the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus. The election is coming up in about a week and a half.
