Readers respond: Guns should be ‘well regulated’

Gun Rights

AP FILE – In this Dec. 23, 2012 file photo, a Texas man shoots an AR-15 rifle at Dragonman’s firing range and gun dealer outside Colorado Springs, Colo. (AP Photo/Brennan Linsley, File) AP Why is it that so many pro-gun advocates focus on the final words of the Second Amendment rather than the first: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” I grew up in a hunting-friendly household, I owned many firearms, took hunter safety courses and treated guns carefully. To me, “well regulated” means that there should be strong rules controlling gun ownership. “The right of the people to keep and bear arms” is secondary and does not mean everyone can own whatever type of gun available with few regulations. That does not sound “well regulated” to me. Charles Boyce, Portland
