Senators Hear From SCOTUS Nominee's Defenders, Critics

WASHINGTON — Witnesses testifying at Thursday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing for Amy Coney Barrett were divided between passionate defenders of the judge and those worried about what her appointment would mean for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the right to an abortion, and other issues. "President Trump has been clear that he’d only appoint justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade ; unfortunately, through learning about Judge Barrett’s record, I understand why the president believes she passes the test," said Crystal Good, a small business owner in Charleston, West Virginia, who had an abortion at age 16. "Please listen to people who’ve had abortions. Hear us when we ask you to not confirm this nominee. Our futures, our families, our lives depend on it." On the other side was Laura Wolk, JD, a former law student of Barrett’s and the first blind woman to serve as a law clerk on the Supreme Court. "Should you confirm Amy Barrett, the country will receive something far greater than simply an unparalleled legal mind. It will gain the service of one of the kindest individuals I’ve ever known," said Wolk. "Her brilliance is matched only by her compassion, and her integrity is unassailable."
