State legislature considers bill package that would curb gun violence

This bill, sponsored by Assemblywoman Pat Fahy and Senator Zellnore Myrie will hold gun manufacturers and dealers responsible if their weapons enter the criminal market. (WRGB) <p>{/p} ALBANY (WRGB) — The Gun Liability Law is now being debated in the Assembly after being passed in the Senate on Wednesday, but GOP Assemblymembers like Assemblyman Chris Tague says the gun is not responsible for shooting somebody, it’s the person who pulls the trigger. The Gun Liability Law is just one of eight bills working its way through the state legislature as part of a Gun Safety legislation package. This bill, sponsored by Assemblywoman Pat Fahy and Senator Zellnore Myrie will hold gun manufacturers and dealers responsible if their weapons enter the criminal market. Since 2005, a federal law has essentially shielded the gun industry from any civil liability or damages for any irresponsible or reckless business practice, but according to Senator Myrie’s office, this bill will bypass that if it becomes law. With six homicides last month, including the death of 15-year-old Destiny Greene, bringing the total of 9 this year so far, Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan says she’s happy to see that this bill passed in the Senate, saying, “It’s not about violating second amendment; it’s costing loopholes and we need all hands-on deck.” However, Republican Assemblyman Chris Tague says holding gun manufacturers liable […]
