Take action against guns now

The April 25 editorial “ Begin Immediately ” is spot on. The U.S. has indeed become a culture that “allows a mass shooting a week” with no governmental response. How do we live with that? It is terrible what we have become accustomed to. My gun-owning friends have no response, fearing that someone will try to take their guns away, but I tell them the problem is not guns — it is gun violence. Gun violence takes the lives of 1,600 Pennsylvanians every year, but most are not from the horrible murders and mass shootings that justifiably get the headlines. They are more from suicides: Nearly 60% of gun deaths in Pennsylvania are from suicide and many of these are military veterans. As you urge, we must “begin immediately” to take action. Let us take small steps. Reasonable and commonsense steps. Consider supporting state S.B. 134, introduced by state Sen. Wayne Fontana, the “Extreme Risk Protection Orders” bill that should help reduce suicides. Support S.B. 217/H.B. 980, which require the reporting of lost and stolen guns. Or support S.B. 88/H.B. 235, which close the background check loophole on private sales of long guns in Pennsylvania. Passing these laws can begin to move us toward a longer-term solution to gun violence — something that we all pray for. Todd Henkelmann West Deer First Published May 1, 2021, 9:00pm
