Tega Swann announces candidacy for governor in 2022 election

ALIQUIPPA — City resident Tega Swann has announced her candidacy for Pennsylvania governor in the May 17 Democratic primary election. Background on the candidate Swann is an immigrant American citizen who is from Nigeria. She originally studied anatomy, before being drawn into the field of helping people through the religious community, which led her to help people in socioeconomic justice. For the past 15 years, Swann, who is an ecumenical, entrepreneurial clergywoman of color, has worked largely with underprivileged populations in Beaver County, and also as an advocate for gender, racial and economic equity in international spaces. “That opened me up to see a lot of the disparities in the Pennsylvania communities, especially the communities that were previously thriving, from mills and industry, that are no longer operating,” she said Tuesday. Swann is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria, where she earned a bachelor of science in anatomy; Trinity School for Ministry in Ambridge, where she obtained a master’s in religion; and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, where she is completing her doctoral studies in missional leadership. She considers herself the privileged single mother of one wonderful child.
