‘Thank You’ event draws Republicans, some Dems

(Press Staff Photo by Geoffrey Plant) The Grant County Thank You Celebration hosted by the Grant County Strong organization drew around 250 people to Bataan Park on Saturday. A Saturday event put on by the Grant County Strong Committee reprised some of the energy seen at the packed February County Commission meeting that saw about 700 residents come out to voice their opinions on gun rights and mining issues. According to the group’s Facebook page, the community celebration was a “thank you to the miners, sportsmen, business owners and residents who attended and spoke at the February Grant County Commission meeting — we killed the anti-mining bills HB 220 & HB 255 and stood up for our second amendment rights.” The Grant County Strong Committee Facebook page states “we are not Freeport-McMoRan,” but a “committee of residents and businesses who strongly support the Grand County copper mines.” The group sold a large bumper sticker at Saturday’s event that depicts a large mine haul truck on a background of a blue silhouette of Grant County (with three stars) and three points of a red Zia (bars) framed by two rifles. Republican District 38 state Rep. Rebecca Dow and Democrats Grant County Sheriff Frank Gomez and Commission Chairman Chris Ponce were among the politicians from both sides of the aisle who addressed a crowd of about 250 people at the Bataan Park pavilion.
