The Public Pulse: Honest argument on gun deaths

A man consoles a woman as parents wait to be reunited with their children after the May 18 shooting at a high school Santa Fe, Texas. I’d like to see a more intellectually honest argument around gun deaths — not placing blame on family, video games, music, loneliness, mental illness. Many people around the world face similar situations and don’t have the same problems. The honest argument is that gun deaths are a cost of the freedom we have to bear arms, a cost that gun rights advocates are willing to pay. Gun control advocates say the cost is not acceptable. Beating around the bush avoids this real difference. It’s too late to lead by example; the rest of the developed world has already done that. But it’s not too late to advocate for our people instead of our pride. Human lives should not be lost because of pride, fear, money or power.
