The real purpose of this weekend's Gun Buyback

This Saturday, June 9th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Tompkins County Regional Airport Fire and Rescue building (72 Brown Road), the Tompkins County Sheriff’s office will be hosting a gun buyback event in collaboration with the County District Attorney’s office and the Tompkins County Legislature. Many people across the country are reeling from the seemingly endless stream of news from mass shootings throughout the country. These events are beyond tragic and incomprehensible and sadly account for a minority of gun-related deaths in the US. A majority of the deaths actually happen with handguns and shotguns. These deaths come from incidences such as domestic violence cases, accidental shootings from children playing with guns not properly stored, the use of guns stolen from homes where they were not properly stored, and suicide. 300×250 image ad Gun buyback events are not designed to collect semi-automatic weapons, high-capacity magazines, and modifiers like bump stocks, which individual owners are not likely to sell in a public forum. These events primarily support residents who purchased guns or have inherited guns and do not want to maintain them or want them in the house anymore. It is a service that is offered that helps remove unwanted guns from homes and keeps the community conversation going about gun safety and ownership. In 2013, the city of Ithaca and Tompkins County jointly hosted a gun buyback successfully purchasing 146 unwanted guns. This event continues this service to the community.
