Now you must be 21 to purchase a gun in Florida. It was a move sparked by the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida back in February. Just last month, on May 2, Hillsborough County Commissioners voted to increase the waiting period for buying a firearm from three to five days. Florida Gun Shows is a traveling show, so 8 On Your Side asked how organizers can guarantee vendors know the local laws. “We make sure all of our vendors who come to the Florida Gun Show abide by all federal regulations and also state laws and whatever local ordinances are in the county that we are enforcing at the time," said show manager Jorge Fernandez. "We also give our vendors a set of vendor rules to let them know what’s enforced for that particular jurisdiction and we make sure they are aware." Fernandez adds that the laws will be enforced. "Well you know it’s the law and us as promoters, the Florida Gun Show doesn’t sell firearms," he said. "We’re a promotion company. We rent a venue, we hire our law enforcement and we hire our security staff, we make sure it is a safe environment – this is a family event – and we make sure all of our vendors are reputable and that they comply with the law."
