UCD hoops standout Bessolo signs to play ball in Greece

Make that four former Aggie women playing basketball professional in Europe. This week, recently graduated Nina Bessolo — the instant-energy veteran of UC Davis coach Jennifer Gross’ four-peat crew in the Big West — signed a deal with AS Niki Lefkadas of Ethniki (A1 National) Women’s Basketball. They tell me it’s the top women’s league in basketball-crazy Greece. Bessolo, the East Bay native who played at Castro Valley High, had an injury-plagued 2019-2020 campaign after being an All-Big West preseason first-team selection. Bessolo, a 6-foot deadeye from beyond the perimeter, had worked herself back into mid-season form by March. But COVID-19 pulled the court out from underneath the regular-season champion Aggies a day before they were to prospect for their second-straight NCAA berth at the BWC Tournament in Anaheim. Signing with Lefdakas, Bessolo will get to play in the city of the same name on a western Greek island in the Mediterranean Sea. Bessolo now joins former teammates Katie Toole (Spain), Morgan Bertsch (Poland) and Pele Gianotti (Luxembourg) in the Aggie version of world basketball domination. Well, at least European. In Greece, Bessolo is expected to join 2013 Dayton graduate Samantha McKay as one of two Americans in the Nike Lefdakas starting lineup. (Seriously.
