US hits new record for year-to-date annual gun sales, report says

(KMOX) – It’s another presidential election year and also another record year for gun sales in the U.S. The 16.7 million firearms sold between January and September this year is a new "year-to-date sales" record, according to new statistics released Monday. The new numbers released by Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting (SAAF) just beat out the previous year-to-date sales record set in 2016, which was 16.6 million guns. In a report released Monday, SAAF says firearm sales are up 66% this year compared to 2019. The SAAF’s numbers are based on data taken from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). A spokesperson for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Mark Oliva, reportedly stated gun sales every month since March of this year were "the strongest of that month ever recorded." “This much is clear as we head into Election Day. Americans of all political persuasions are exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms and doing so in record numbers,” Oliva said according to Fox News . “This hasn’t been a phenomenon of just red states, but also blue states. Never before have so many Americans chosen to exercise their right to firearm ownership, including the estimated 6.9 million who purchased a firearm for the first time this year.” You can see the full SAAF report here: © 2020 KMOX (Entercom).
