Van Drew turns his back on NATO | Letters

On Aug. 15, 2021, U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew issued a press release regarding the chaotic withdrawal of American troops in Afghanistan. He referred to President Joe Biden’s “decision to simply hand Afghanistan back to the Taliban” as, in part, “a slap in the face… to our NATO allies…”. What, then, would Van Drew, R-2nd Dist., consider his own vote April 5 against House Resolution 831, which “ reaffirms unequivocal support for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as an alliance founded on democratic principles ”? The congressman’s “no” vote is certainly a slap in the face to the sizable Ukrainian diaspora in his district, and to all Americans who see that “never again” is, indeed, occurring now in Ukraine. I suggest Van Drew visit the mass graves in Bucha and Irpin, speak to the traumatized refugees in Poland, or see what remains of the city of Mariupol to understand just how important the reaffirmation of our commitment to NATO is. Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federation will not stop with Ukraine, and our NATO allies must be secure in our unwavering support for their territorial sovereignty. The invasion of Ukraine is a clear-cut case of imperialist aggression and a collection of unthinkable war crimes. There are no removed third parties; there is no neutrality. There are only those who stand for justice and freedom, and those whose inaction enables the growth of tyranny. I am ashamed that the congressman has chosen the latter path.
