(WSAZ) MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) – Washington County is the latest location in the country to be designated a “Second Amendment Sanctuary”. The county commission Thursday approved a resolution issuing the proclamation. It’s one of several local governments around the country to do so in the last two years. Commission President Kevin Ritter admits it doesn’t give the county sovereignty over any state or federal laws. But a backer of the idea believes the action is more than symbolic. ”The present occupant of the White House said repeatedly during his campaign that, if elected, he would sidestep the legislative process, and use the executive power of the presidency on gun control,” Ritter said, reading a prepared statement. “He has made good on that promise.” “Our public servants have not been held accountable to their oath of office,” said Kelly Beeson, of the group Washington County Stands United. “We have great public servants in Washington County, as we can see here today, that want to secure our unalienable rights.” The vote comes two weeks after President Joe Biden announced executive orders intended to tighten gun restrictions, following a series of deadly mass shootings. Wirt County’s commission passed a similar resolution last year. Wood County was asked to do so, but opted instead to pass a “Constitutional Sanctuary” designation instead. Copyright 2021 WTAP.
