Where Alabama Senate candidates Doug Jones, Tommy Tuberville stand on abortion, gun rights

Abortion and gun rights have been perennials in Alabama politics. Republican Senate nominee Tommy Tuberville recently rolled out an ad featuring a woman expressing regret for an abortion in her teen years, saying Democratic U.S. Sen. Doug Jones should “seek forgiveness” for his support for abortion rights. The ad doesn’t say what the candidate’s views are. The former Auburn head football coach says he is anti-abortion, and last year said he was “all for” a law that banned abortion in almost all non-medical circumstances in Alabama, including cases of sexual assault. Tuberville’s campaign declined to answer questions from the Advertiser about abortion and gun rights. The Republican nominee has also declined to answer questions about COVID-19 and climate change. Jones supports abortion rights, writing in response to questions that abortion “is a deeply personal decision between a woman, her health care provider and her faith.” “There are deep disagreements on the issue of abortion and I respect those who oppose abortion for religious or personal reasons,” Jones wrote. “But while some candidates might deny the complexity of this issue — and appeal to folks in a politically self-serving way that ignores the facts — this issue is rarely so simple for those who face this gut-wrenching situation.” Jones does oppose late-term abortions, which are rare, and wrote in response to questions that he “does not support the use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortions.” Jones, like other Democrats, has voted for appropriations bills that include the Hyde Amendment, which […]
