Who is running for 13th Congressional seat: A 'Trump man' and a former Thornberry intern

Former White House doctor Ronny Jackson and Gus Trujillo, who once interned for the man whose office they both seek, appear on the Nov. 3 ballot for U.S. House of Representatives, District 13. U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry , who has served the district including Wichita Falls since 1995, announced in 2019 he would not be seeking reelection. Dr. Jackson, 53, the Republican who retired from the Navy as a rear admiral and served as White House physician from 2013-2018, touted during the primary election that he has the ear of the president and is Donald Trump’s pick to hold the House seat representing North Texas. Jackson said during the campaign he was born in a small farming community at the base of the Panhandle and raised in Texas where family members still live. "The reason I’m running in this race is because these are my people here," he said during the runoff election with Republican Josh Winegarner. “I am one of you.” Jackson retired from the Navy, left his post at the White House and moved back to the Amarillo area. Jackson’s online campaign touts "Texas values" as his driving force for running for the seat vacated by retiring Thornberry, who endorsed Winegarner in the primary . His opponent, Gus Trujillo, also of Amarillo, handedly beat opponent Greg Sagan in the July 2020 primary runoff, garnering a 2-1 margin over Sagan.
