Gervais resident defends importance of Second Amendment, Aurora American Legion Auxiliary fundraiser at Carls, Jr. a success In answer to Mr. Ponce’s letter in the May 30 issue of the Woodburn Independent: Why do the local Democrat political hacks and office holders all demand that local Woodburn law-abiding citizens give up their Second Amendment rights to have and bear arms? New York City has highly restrictive firearm laws. Does Tammany Hall protect New York City law-abiding residents from the antics of the Cosa Nostra Mafia and rogue political types? Yes, if you pay protection and plenty of that. The strawman argument he raised about muzzle loading muskets and flint lock pistols holds no water. At the time the Second Amendment was being written, the Kentucky long rifle occupied the same position in the public debate as the AR-15 does today. It was muzzle loading and flint lock, only vastly superior to the Brown Bess of that time and the bureaocracy couldn’t control it because it was made by manufacturers. The stories that have circulated say that AR-15 type weapons in the hands of militia men put down the Ferguson, Missouri riot really quickly and effectively, stopping the arson and looting when the local Democrat political authorities refused to allow the National Guard and the local police forces to do their jobs restoring order.
