Yet Again: An American Gun Tragedy

People embraced in Santa Fe, Tex., after a deadly high school shooting. To the Editor: We have become inured. Another shooter has taken the lives of people whose lives were just beginning. Another senseless mass shooting with continuous TV coverage. Another response from first responders. Another day of turmoil and upheaval in communities unprepared for such tragedy. Another shooter captured with a cache of weapons. Another response from President Trump . Another promise to act. Another day of reckoning that showed that empty words from the White House after Parkland, Fla., were just that: empty words. Another day with the reality that the need for sane gun control is a national emergency. Another day, another school. Another tearful embrace of parents with their safe children. Another anxious phone call, “Are you safe?” Another day. O.M.G., it’s just another day! DORIS FENIG, FLORAL PARK, N.Y. To the Editor: Yet another school shooting. How can our children learn when they have to worry about active shooters in school? I guess it’s time for “hope and prayers” from the Republicans in control of the White House and Congress. And the usual feeble comments about better and more available mental health services, and the idiotic trope, “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” Other developed countries around the world don’t have these problems.
